Dearest everyone,
I am delighted to inform you all that we (your favourite maths chums) are organising yet more revision based goodness in the form of a whole day devoted to everyones favourite, well thought out and not at all ludicrous course: Algebra II.
The fun starts at 11am in MS01 on wednesday 13th, the approximate plan is as follows:
- 11:00-11:50, An heuristic introduction to groups: making the abstract intuitive with examples, justifications and a review of the lagrange theorem.
- 11:55-12:45, Group applications: Getting you acquainted with the basic tools of group theory: actions, conjugacy and the isomorphism theorems
- 15 mins break- bring your own lunch!...
- 1:00-1:50, An heuristic introduction to rings: again stressing intuitiveness here, a few examples and a few key theorems to follow.
- 1:55-3:00, Domains: again, secretly a very intuitive set of concepts hiding in what looks like intimidating algebra. Key concepts, key theorems and understanding why.
- 3:00pm Onwards, Q&A: We retire to the undergraduate workroom for some hardcore Questions&Answerness, free tea and coffee.
As you can no doubt tell, it's all going to be a bit intense: there's too much material there to really teach in a term and to do it in a day is going to be pretty manic, so bear with us. If you have any specicific requests/fears/puzzlements, contact us via the website contact button or bring your problems to revision cafe (tuesday, thursday 1-3 undergraduate workroom) and we'll see what we can do. And remember, all of these lectures are INFORMAL, audience participation is 100% encouraged...
Stay tuned for more revision group fabness.
Much love,
ToM, Academic Support- the WMS
