I tried to book us a practice session on Monday evening but I got there too late. Given it's pretty hard to get that spot, I was wondering if you guys are interested in one at some other time during the week (I'm potentially free more or less all the time :p). Also, I've booked one tomorrow (Friday) from 12-2 if any of you guys want to come, otherwise I'll just practice alone as I originally intended.

I've got a bass, it's pretty basic but it'll do the job :)

Friday 12-2 could work... How much does it cost?

You don't check the forum often enough :p

btw we need to decide on some songs we want to try next time (and what time we should get the room) so we can more or less practice them or get an idea beforehand this time :P

Listening to it atm - you say its easy to play? 0.0 But I would definitely agree that it sounds great fun to sing :D Plus I've listened to so much SOAD that it's very familiar territory

No probs with that =)

My request is Master of Puppets by Metallica, possibly not the easiest but its one of my favorite songs, probably doable and quite fun to play. Plus I've got good tabs for all the instruments: tabs & mp3.

There is a way to get it there actually, same thing as with the master of puppets tabs, I can send you a similar download link by e-mail if you want.

Also, we need to decide on when we should book the practice room for the next practice, possibly after next Wednesday now but there might still be good spots left for online booking.

The problem is I have no comuter here, and the warwick computers won't load the
software that transfers the music from the computer to my micro. So even if i have
the music i can't put it on my micro. I can however listen to it on the computer if
you send it to me.

I do 3 hours work on the computers a week to do with moderating so this isn't so
crazy.

As for a request I just wana hear some monkey wrench despite the fact im the one
holding everyone up instrumentally.

Monday 10-12 2-4
Tuesday 10-12 12-2

Anyone interested?

Update: I booked the Tuesday 12-2 one for myself but as before anyone who wants to come is welcome to do so :p

i can get it moved maybe.

Havnt managed to get my teeth into the tabs and music you sent me yet, I'll try hav
a go be4 then.

Also CJ if u want 2 u can giv guitar a lil go. If your really good i might try tune

I'll probably bring along some tabs as well anyway (or even my laptop, I reckon we might be able to use the grad's wifi from the practice room) and we'll see what we can do.
It should be fun in any case :D

Sometime after Wednesday since all the slots are booked till then, I might try to get to the Bandsoc meeting though I'm not sure I'll make it. If anyone else can and feels like booking one then though, I'm up for it whenever it is :p

Otherwise we'll see with the internet booking I suppose, I'll text you this time if you wish :p

Right, I've been playing with Audacity and I've thrown together an example prerequisite knowledge, the lyrics aren't right, the sound levels are screwed, and I haven't put enough effort into getting the timing right or anything, but I think it gives a good idea of what sort of thing I was thinking :)

You should be able to get it here.

Jamie :)

By the way, if you have Guitar Pro or something like that you could tab some riffs into it or the full example and I'll put together some drums and see how it'd sound. I was thinking of doing it directly with the audio file but I'm too lazy for that and I think it'd end up being quite sloppy anyhow.

Yeah, I think I may have a copy of guitar pro somewhere on this PC... I've thrown together 4 song outlines total so far, I may put them all down through Audacity to make some audio files. So far I've got that metallish one that you've already heard, a kinda funky upbeat one, a cheesy riff which can be used in a number of different ways I guess (need to play with that some more, just wrote it a few minutes ago), and another one which I don't really know how to define, maybe metally again, not really sure, have made up it all on my acoustic so far :)

Anyway, to find guitar pro...

Jamie

ps is the WMS site's clock not been moved forward? Steve?

Right, attached are 3 midi files of potential songs (other than the one that you've heard an outline for already) which you need to rename from .txt to .mid.

Two are about 2 mins, and one is just under 1 minute - they are not full songs, just outlines of potential riffs. Furthermore, these sounded a lot better in Guitar Pro when I made them thanks to the Real Sound Engine or whatever it's called, the midi files don't do them justice on the most part, but it does give you an idea of the riffs :)

Jamie

PS - forgot to mention, I've forwarded the Guitar Pro files on to Cosmin to lay down some beats as well, could be interesting. I might try playing with the bass in a bit as well, after I've done some more of my essay.

Ok, I've got drums for that first one, it sounds pretty cool (and quite heavy :D) and is guaranteed to destroy my legs once I start playing it! I would say they're about 80% finished, need to tweak a few things here and there but I'll get around to that later (and if you have suggestions they're welcome of course). The bass should be pretty straightforward I suppose, one cool thing would be to get a bar or two (during the parts with no drums) with only the bass, it would make the song breathe a little and I suppose we need that, otherwise the guitar and drums will drown the rest (though at the moment that's pretty normal since we don't have the other instruments and vocals so can't adapt the song to them).

Hopefully I'll actually be able to play this properly, it should normally be feasible with some practice (especially getting the double kick stuff and some of those transitions in time). I think I can play pretty much any part of it separately but playing them all together could be significantly harder :p

Anyhow, here it is in Guitar Pro 5 format (everyone should get it as well if possible, it's probably going to be quite useful, plus as Jamie said the songs sound infinetly better) and MIDI (you know the drill, erase the _.txt). I'll post some sort of mp3 (or ogg, I personally like it better but I don't know if everyone can play it) later, I have a really good drum sample program which I have to figure out how to use properly and use it to make the drums sound really badass.

Edit: I unintentionally messed up the gp5 file the first time I uploaded so if anyone had already downloaded anything (which is highly unlikely :p), you should download these instead.

Edit no. 2: I'm putting version numbers now since I've been making a few small changes :p

I think we may need some stick clicking in the quiet bits (i put metronome on when playing and it sounded better), also we need to get rid of bars 73-74, they don't fit at all timing wise. The only other thing is that sometimes the drums seem a bit abrupt when they come in after a quiet bit, almost like it's the start of a new bar, and it doesn't quite sit right... I'm not sure how to fix that though...

Other than that, sounds good :)

Jamie

EDIT: Actually, scrap most of what I said, listened to it again and it sounded a lot better, I think it was just GP caching it or something so it all sounded a bit off. I still stick with getting rid of 73-74 though...

EDIT 2: Added the GP5 file with 73&74 removed, I think it sounds better...

Yeah when playing it in GP sometimes it freezes for a split second at the start of bars or so and messes up the timing, I've noticed that as well. As for 73 and 74 I was actually thinking of changing the beat for that whole part (67 to 77) anyhow, I'll probably put some tom groove which I've yet to figure out and I think it'll sound much better, there are a few sections that I'll probably end up changing completely anyway (some of them are pretty much just ideas I'm trying out and need a lot of tweaking - the "80% finished" was a major exaggeration it's probably closer to 25% :p). Cutting those bars out won't hurt though, the section seemed pretty lengthy to me anyway. About the timing actually, that riff with the muted chords is more readable when written in bars of 3/4 and 5/4 for every two bars of 4/4, but it doesn't really matter, it just looks a little weird in 4/4 :p. Also, it would probably be a good idea to add one or two bars as an intro riff (possibly with the bass entering first but not necessarily) since now it just sort of jumps into one of the main riffs from the start.

Right, here's it with a bass line, simplish so Christian can hopefully stand a chance! :)

Jamie

EDIT: One minor edit that I can't be bothered to update for, the final bass note (A string, fret 10) should be E string, fret 3

Sounds good! I've got a suggestion for that intro actually, I've modified the first two bars for the bass somewhat (it's still quite easy) and added a fade-in for the guitar, if you like it better this way we can keep it otherwise the old one is fine as well.

Fade in guitar was good, but wasn't keen on the high G's to start with, should have been A's, have changed accordingly, and played around with bar 2, think it fits together better now. The only thing we need now is rhythm/lead guitar parts for Alex (what I mean by this is perhaps some lead parts that I can play and Alex can play what's there now), need to make it about a minute or more longer (adding a breakdown/solo could be an option), and working out how to and then adding lyrics (tough. very f'ing tough on this song.).

It's cool, though I quite liked the G's :p. I'm still trying to figure out the beat for that part just before the end, I'm still not too sure about it, and making some other general improvements.

The thing about vocals (and potentially a solo as well) is that the guitar is very dense at the moment (especially now that the bass is in there as well), it might be a good idea to try to see if we can get some parts with longer notes and/or kick the tempo down a notch (though I'm not 100% sure about the latter, it's still ok at 140 bpm for instance, but significantly less probably won't be great without some modifications), with the distorsion's added sustain it'll still sound good and hopefully make some room for vocals and soloing, so it's probably worth trying out.

Tried dropping those text files in foobar and they didn't want to play :) Any chance that I can get a listen of them without installing Guitar Pro and things?

Yeah, one of the 2 is MIDI but you need to change the extension from .txt to .mid for it to work, not sure if Foobar reads them but it's probable, otherwise Winamp or Media Player will work fine. It will sound like crap though, especially the distorted guitar and the snare (the bass sounds ok though), but it sort of gives you and idea all the same. I could also send you Guitar Pro but I don't actually have the installer anymore so I'm not sure it'd work.

By the way, anyone wanna try jamming to some of this stuff (or something else) next week (or later)?

Update: Tons of open spots right now so if you guys don't have too much work until next Wednesday we can probably book something easily. I'm getting one for myself Friday 2-4 but as usual anyone who wants to come is welcome to do so (the new BS practice room is in the maintenance room in the corridor by South Central).

Slight issue I'm afraid - I've severed my digital nerve in my left index finger so can't play guitar. I also missed 2 of my exams (although it should be ok touch wood). My hand is bandaged heavily, and I have lost quite a bit of sensation in my finger, although this should come back to me over the coming weeks and months. I'll still come along to practice, and perhaps aim at teaching guitar and bass to xn and alex, but no playing for me for a while. I'll pop a post on my blog with a picture of my hand tomorrow probably.

I'm depressed and my hand fucking canes.

Yeah... It's cool that you're still coming though. There might be a minor problem due to the fact that the bandsoc site is screwing up (as it so often does) and won't let me log on (I even created a WMS account for it since my normal one didn't work (and the WMS one did initially work), with a credit for tomorrow which I had bought but which wasn't yet on the account (so the slot wasn't yet booked), and now that one isn't working either...). I've sent them an e-mail and hopefully they'll fix it until then or book the room for us, but I'll keep you updated if nothing happens (in the worst case we can still go and pay for it afterwards I guess).

P.S. If anyone needs to use that account now or later, the login is WMS and the password is "mathsissexy" (yeah, that's the most characteristic WMS thing I found I guess :p), though there's not much you can do with it except book practices.

Update: It's fixed now, and booked from 2-4 as planned.

Hi, sorry i missed this and even more sorry i didn't manage to get a message to
anyone. I have had a severe bought of tonsilitis. I too missed 2 exams. I am now back
in Leeds (again). I'm over the bad part now and i'll be back in Warwick (again) on
Monday.

I'm currently tackling the email mountain that's piled up.

Get well soon Jamie, i'm amazed you managed to have a worse week than me.

Also CJ or Cosmin did either of u2 go 2 the Number Theory organisational lecture?

I didn't go to the Number Theory thing (or anything else this week for that matter) and I think CJ's dropped it, but I doubt it was too interesting, I just know there's a test next Friday but I assume you've received that e-mail as well (it's bound to be ridiculously easy anyway).

Unfortunately the season is over so that's very unlikely to happen now (though we still have a sort of friendly match left, so I guess its not totally out of the question). :p

By the way I just noticed we were already listed on the bandsoc "Bands" section of the website so I guess the "WMS" account was useless (which is good since it doesn't work anymore anyhow :p). It's funny that we're listed as "mathcore" though. :D

Well, I don't think anyone on campus really has proper p2p. :p

Mathcore is pretty much math rock/metal (i.e. technical rock/metal that uses a lot of odd time signatures and whatnot) mixed with hardcore punk, bands like "The Dillinger Escape Plan" and "Converge" are pretty representative. Listen to some Dillinger and you'll quickly see why I found it funny that we're listed as it. :D

Anyone feel like practicing Monday 8-10? That spot is finally free to book (not sure for how long though)!
Otherwise pretty much the whole of Saturday afternoon is free as well (except 6-8), but I think Alex won't be here (I've got myself 4-6 though).

Update: No more free spots Saturday, though surprisingly the Monday evening one is still free.

allow the thread to reach that number naturally. Also im not that sad or patient.

Not as late as it is now, and I (might) actually intend to go to class tomorrow morning :O (I am after all the reigning champion of "Insomniac Mathematician" :D).

Of course you're still in, we need to find you some lyrics to sing though :p (shouldn't be too hard, just pick some random proof and turn it into as song :D). The one song we've half-written is nothing like Dillinger though (which is why the mathcore reference was funny) so I doubt you would need that kind of vocals (its up to you if you wanna try though :p). If the site you were refering to is Megaupload the WNL thing is probably just one of those random character strings sites ask you to enter so as to prove you're human :p.

On a different note, I've finally managed to make my drum sampling software thing work in a very rudimentary kind of way, this is what the drums sound like with it (though there's still some EQing and stuff I should do, 16th notes on the hi-hat sound horrible, the whole bridge part before the very end is still very experimental, etc. etc. but the drums sound waaaaaaaay better). I might sync it with the guitar and bass later on to see how it all sounds together but right now I probably should go to sleep soon :p.

P.S. While we're on the subject, Alex, if you read this in time, could you bring my drumhead sometime tomorrow? (if not it doensn't matter, it's not urgent at all)

Edit: 200th post, yay :p

How is everyone racking up their post counts? I used to be first...

Probably by posting a lot of borderline useless things (much like this post). :p
(Still, I don't actually try to get my post count higher)

Significantly less than what I'm posting here I guess. Shamless posting spree by the way. :D

I've just checked the Bandsoc website and we have pretty much 3 good options for practice: 8-10 PM either Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Which do you guys prefer?

Yeah I think it's probably the best time as well, plus it's a relatively short time after revision cafe so we'll all be around. I'll book it tomorrow at 12 when online booking reopens so unless anyone else has can't make it (if so please tell me until then) the next practice is tomorrow 8-10 PM.

I wasn't. Sorry kids, my dinner finished at nine and i hadn't planned for this at all (being, as i am, somewhat lame at forumness).

Still, it seemed like no-one was going to get much done (jamie ill and no bass!)... hmmm, can people text me the next time when we plan stuff? (07896347195)

Cheers, Tombina

Nothing to worry about, me and cosmin were the only ones who attended, and i was disgustingly late due to silly reasons. One day it will work.

Anyone feel like practicing sometime before next wednesday? Lots of spots available.

By the way, Jamie, you don't have that bass anymore right?

I in fact do have the bass, but I probably can't play given that I have my essay presentation and an exam next week, sorry!

Hmm, I know everyone is busy but if anyone's interested in squeezing in a practice session this week (basically friday and this weekend), let me know, the booking schedule is pretty much empty.

Still why test? Are you checking the band still exists?

Also CJ get your posts up it looks bad for me to have more than you...

Did it ever? Still, the question remains, what kind of test were you performing? Testing to see if posting gets your post count up? Testing if the beef was in this thread? Testing if it would keep people away from work (in which case, successful test)?

One of the great mysteries of this forum, along with Reuters' identity and the location of the much coveted beef.

Well I assumed it had something to do with editing because it was just after you had edited the "Drown me slowly" post (and I reverted your edit :P). But I didn't see your test post beforehand so I'm not sure what you were testing exactly.

I've got the practice room tomorrow 2-4 if anyone still wants to mess around for an hour or two.
