Term 3 Discussion Groups

Seeing how I'm in the maths dept for the 2nd straight Dg to which practically no one turned up, I'm beginning to question the usefulness of having them at all this term. Before giving up though, I thought it would be a good idea to ask if anyone at all is still interested in coming to them. The Dg this Thursday is still on no matter what since it's already prepared and (pretty heavily) advertised, but I don't see a point in running them regularly (especially at the current two per week rate) if we get less than 4-5 people every time. So, post here if you'd still like to see discussion groups this term and plan on attending them regularly...

You already know this but yes, I'm still interested in coming to discussion groups.

Two discussion groups per week might be a bit much, but I don't see the problem of lack of attendees being solved by only having one a week, as the problem seems to be that no one is ever in the department at the moment anyway, let alone at 7:30...

So maybe we should just stop discussion groups for this term (though I must admit I would like if we didn't).

I'm not in the habit of turning up to every discussion group, especially if I don't know what it's about beforehand. I'm still interested on the discussion groups though. I wonder if I should consider doing one someday.

I knew you would be but that's still only about 3-4 people guaranteed to turn up. Stopping them altogether this term wasn't really the plan, I would probably start by removing just one of the two unless people actually decide to turn up to both. Either way, it's useful to be able to gauge people's interest to some extent.

I went to the grad last night in the hope of finding someone to drink with... You weren't there...

Basically: keep going to the discussion groups, otherwise I don't get to drink on Mondays or Thursdays...

Ok i could go to the DGs myself... but its not my fault that i don't understand them. After all, i'm busy editing the magazine...

we could just reduce it to one per week, and even if we don't have a dg it'd be good to still have a social.

Might be an idea to have only one a week I guess... And I was about to suggest making it Thursdays, and then I remembered I'm normally busy then O.o

Heavily advertised? Are there posters up in the maths building or something? ¬¬

As a matter of fact, yes, there are some. Some have been taken down though.

Yeah, by (past? :p) WMS advertising standards that's pretty extensive. I'm going to see how many people turn up to the next few discussion groups and if the current trend of no one turning up continues I would probably drop the Thursday one since the Monday one seems more poplular in general. I have to admit I don't really like the idea of dropping them entirely, even if it means holding talks to an audience of two people. :p

Wish I'd thought of doing that to the androgynous image, cosmin; as you can see I haven't bothered to get an image of my own yet.

(I'm not accustomed to forums, is it against the etiquette to make off-topic comments like that?)

Before anyone asks, I can't make it to this evening's Dg.

Can I request that next Mondays DG finishes early in light of the top b social and the fact i have to be in the grad from 8.30.

If you could be done by 8.30 and only have a 1 hour talk rather than usual I'd be grateful. I could do a talk on my essay if you want, then it'd be all on me to finish on time.

All up to you Cosmin, and anyone else who wants to complain on this topic...

Sounds good. Should I advertise it as a talk on diophantine equations on the website?

Sure.

I could write it myself tonight if you want. Maybe I should do a power point...

Edit: How do you add an event I've been trying periodically for the upcoming social but I don't know how, also how do i send emails to everyone in the society.

"Create Content" on the website toolbar for events and just send an e-mail to "members@warwickmaths.org" for a society e-mail. If you want to write the blurb yourself you're welcome to do so but I've got no problem with doing it myself.

Yeah but you might make it sound like I'm doing something non-trivial, and I don't like false advertisement. Do whatever.

Don't say that, now he won't want you to do the write up.

Like I care. You can be the new Jamie (seeing as he's all but absent), and you can stand up and explain something in the middle of the discussion group while I just stand and wait. In fact at that point I'll have a sit down. I'm sure with this little explanation you'll manage to drag the talk well over time.

I've just finished string orchestra rehearsal. There's little point in saying this, but I hope the discussion group that's going on right now is going swingingly.
