Supervisisons

Does anybody actually got to supervisions. I dont think they are worth the paper they are printed on. All we do is talk about really simple things that are so easy to prove I could do them while I think about going to the toilet (I save the really big proofs for when I'm actually going, but then I forget a pen and can't write them down) I guess they could be a good idea. Do the lecturers mind if you don't go to them? because I can't be bothered.

Actually I think they can be really useful, I was told this morning that they:

were the only part of the week worth bothering with.

In the first year, to not go is silly, even if it's all too easy for you, but in the second year, if you have a particularly knowledge-named supervisor I can understand you not wanting to go.

P.s. loving the toilet humour.

Well, I wouldn't want to be a bad influence or anything, but I never went to them and no one really cared... :p
I think the bottom line with pretty much everything at university is that there's no point in going if you don't feel like you're getting something out of it.

I think it depends quite a bit on the teaching style of your supervisor, and indeed the other supervisees.[/obvious comment]

I tend to go to supervisions since it means that I get started on my assignments on Tuesday. Otherwise I'd be doing everything in 2 hours on Thursday.

If they mark your work, no matter what they say, being nice to them will get you more marks. Go to supervisions and be nice.

Also legible handwriting helps.

Apart from that they're useless. I remember having a massive argument, with me against my supervisor and the 3 other people in the group. They said the harmonic series was Cauchy because the n and n+1 difference converged to zero. I said Cauchy implies convergent and the harmonic series doesn't converge. You'd be surprised how long this argument went on for.

Sounds like they had the definition all messed up. In the booklet this year they specifically stated that the difference between consecutive terms converging is not enough. The harmonic series is supposed to be the classic example of that.

That's a massive mistake, I don't actually get how any supervisor could be that incompetent...

He was ok. He told us about bears. Some times I would use a method that wasn't the standard, but was correct, and I'd get a 0 for the work because it differed from the mark scheme and he didn't understand it. That pissed me off. The last supervision was at the pub tho. Legend.
