Gradually I feel it filling the exec, insubstantial as the aether and twice as pointless. Our talks coordinator is a number theorist and our social sec is teetering on the brink- soon every Dg will be little more than counting colours and pratting about with primes. These parlour games must stop in favour of proper maths! I have a small predjudice on the subject (my parents were killed in a freak L-function accident- pretty much the same deal as batman), and I believe it is time to kill the waif-like half-maths beast that walks among us. Pitchfork, torch in hand- stand up and be counted- are you with me, or against me? (Cosmin wins!!) |

I'm going to push a hardline of set theory and topology to combat the wasting disease that is number theory |

Topology I was obviously not bashing topology itself because it would have been taking the exact attitude to which I was refering.
But in a topological sense that's perfectly compatible with them being totally closed-minded as well! :P |

At no point did we advocate massive centralisation, Ideologically perverting the philosophies of Nietsche to justify the murder of 6 million jews and countless others in the misanthropic name of elitism. Number theorists on the other hand...
A set is closed if and only if it's complement is open, but we have already asserted that a topologists mind is open, which implies it is either the empty set or the whole set (ie. maths). It cannot be the empty set, since every topologist knows that cosmin smells. We are forced to conclude that topologists are omniscient. QED P.S. Godwin's law. YOU LOSE! |

The topologist's basic view of anything non-continuous is that it's sub-mathematical and should be eradicated. That's a fairly good analogy to a certain side of nazism.
Since when? For all you know this may be the discrete topology. :p P.S. I dare you to find a more characteristically elitist type of mathematician. :D |

Yes, although I'd like to side with Tom here, I'm a bit dubious about the claim "a topologists mind is open, which implies it is either the empty set or the whole set". |

I have to agree with Cosmin on this one, his argument is very compelling. Topology is clearly inferior to number theory. |

Why would anyone want maths to be made up of only one subject? That'd just be boring... |

Tom surely your mind isn't connected (due to schizophrenia for example...) and the subset of it that relates to maths is open. Therefore there must be a topology finer than the trivial topology on it. So topologists don't know everything (sadly). |

Well no, you would be the first to know that taking a sentence out of it's context and giving it a totally different meaning isn't going to prove you right, I'm sure you would've heckled to death anyone else who did that :p (wearing a master of the obvious-proof coat so don't try) |

It's not as if I actually thought "I" was right though, was it? :p I still win at being the better troll. I'm sure Frank agrees wholeheartedly. |

I had the same coat made out of antiparticles... I take that back anyway. I declare the winners to be Jon and PBiG. |

The intersection of the two is what counts and that's PBiG and Jon. :p |

That's actually what I thought you meant but I don't see why it shouldn't be forever (in fact, I'm lying, number theorists have all already played and finished Duke Nukem Forever). Also:
Edit: You locked a thread. :O |
