Anyone planning to run for President? Just thought I'd get the flame war started early :-)

I think the best position on exec (and thus the best exec member) is website editor.

My my, we are stirring trouble...

Website editor sucks and you know it Jones. Academic support is unquestionably the most important position on exec- I run events that people depend on: rendering the society more close-knit with personal one on one interaction, realizing all of the WMS mission statement with events that bring people closer and bring people closer to maths- making degrees more pleasurable and more easy all at once.

You just have to choose a nice font for the forum.

We actually have no idea at the moment, but soon. ish. Sort of week 5 I think. But yeah, there'll be loads of publicity up and you can run through the site (first years more than welcome). What positions were you guys thinking about?

The answer is sadly epsilon away from yes, but in a good way-

It depends what you pick:

  • We've got two academic support positions going for next year- which, take it from me are a lot of work but rewarding as hell
  • There's web editor- which should be pretty easy provided you know a little drupal (the code the site's written in), as steven's done a pretty good job of setting things up
  • Social sec is as heavy as you want it to be really, though be prepared to lose sleep around any event you run, but in general you can coast
  • Publicity and marketing will be getting a little tougher next year, we're going to send you on a training course to learn how to make stuff spiffy, and you're pretty much working on the whim of the rest of exec
  • Revision guides is again one you can do as much or as little as you fancy, the courses shouldn't change much so you'll pretty much be editing Dave's (rather good) ones unless you're more ambitious
  • Treasurer is easy but boring. Numbers. Lots of maths cafe reciepts. Boo.
  • Same for secretary really... you make agendas and room bookings. Oh, and take minutes.
  • Then there's president, that's another you make for yourself, but it could be quite hotly contested... ...or not. Dave looks like he's going for it and the one who wins is usually the one whose face most people know. Still don't know who I'd back though, could as yet go down to the manifesto...

Oh Tom, if only you used spaces a little more after *'s then you'd:

  • make the website work for you
  • allow us to read your lists more easily

In any case, I don't think it needs to be a lot of work, it can just turn out like that sometimes. It's really up to you, and hopefully it won't feel like it's hard work when you're doing it, so that's something. You can come along to our next exec meeting (Next Weds (30th) at 3pm) to find out how hard it might be :-D

It's worth mentioning that lots of new postions are more available than usual being that nearly all the current exec are leaving. I think there's only 3 people not. Not including Yun. I may well have forgotten people.

The exec is well worth running for anyway.

Go team.

You forgot Magazine Editor! :O:O:O
It's pretty self explanatory though I guess. It would be an awesome position if people actually bothered to send articles in. :P

I'd quite like to get on the exec, but am I too late to get involved? The stuff you guys are doing looks really good by the way, my supervisor was talking about it all the time!

It's definitely not too late. We'll be having an exec meeting about it and other issues on Wednesday. Anyone is welcome to attend of course. In fact coming to that is just a place to ask questions and get answers. What will happen is (Steven willing) an election part of the website will go up and using your website account you can apply for positions. There will be a deadline for that and you'll have to write a very brief manifesto or something to get people to vote for you. Then people will vote for you via the website. Democratic.

As a failed exec applicée, I say go for it! The society wouldn't EXIST without people like you, and as has been rightly pointed out tons of the exec are leaving this year so it's a nice, painless way to get an academic exec posish.

I guess all you need is a smidge of enthusiasm for the subject, an ability to kee pbig promises, and about 50 large to bribe key members of the SSLC

I don't think he reads the forums anyhow (I did a member search :P), so you may as well use his "name" instead of cough.

You do realise that by asking me that you're making me procrastinate even more, right? (and deraliling the thread as well) :P

Surprisingly, it's about "the sequence of primes". Probably the last thing you'd expect coming from me. Still, I think it might turn out to be a decent essay, on the condition that I have enough time to finish it. I smell an all-nighter...

Well "the sequence of primes" is a quite vague subject, but I'll let you focus on what to actually put in your essay before asking for a finer cover of your essay. :p

Specifically, it's a proof by induction that the sequence of primes is finite (after all induction only works on finite sets and the set of primes is finite).

(Whoa, I managed to make fun of both PBiG and Alex in the same post. :D)

(Or is it ?)

Not really, it was pretty unintentional. Still, this was supposed to be a thread about exec elections, so this is quite off topic... :p
