Hey all,

I've had a request from a couple of my Supervisees for a Maths By Computer crash course to get people up and running with MATLAB - would this be useful to people, please register your interest here!

Hi!

I'd been looking at crash courses, but the website wasn't working and I couldn't post anything in here. I'd really like a MATLAB course, I'm hopeless at it at the moment and the tutorial things are crap.

So +1 there :D

Hi

That would be really useful; I speak for myself and lots of other people I know who've been struggling with it.

Thanks.

Wow, this is turning out to be quite popular.

Just a small reminder that if any other topics are bothering you, you're free to create another thread to suggest a crash course on that too!

It's great that you're all interested! How would you like the Crash Course? More lecture style or more seminar style with asking of questions?

Wow, it's great to see so many people interested in a matlab crash course. What I'd like to suggest would be a few small group tutorials in the linux room, perhaps 4 or 5 people in each group for an hour or two each. If this seems acceptable to people, please do post here, if you've got better ideas, also post!

We'll see if we can get this stuff started in the next week or two.

To the others reading the forum (I mean, other than 1st years), who else is up for running classes? I certainly am (of course)

I think less able first years might find Linux scary at first. Admittedly they should learn asap, but perhaps when they're struggling with matlab a change of system is a bit much?

It's not as if you need to interact with the operating system in any way after having opened MatLab anyway... I don't see how it would change anything.

Yeah, besides, I see no reason why Linux should be daunting anyway. Matlab under Linux is exactly the same as Matlab under Windows...

Small groups seems ok as long as we don't have an excessive number of people. I'm up for helping out as well, as soon as I brush up on my Matlab skills. :P

To be fair, the only reason I suggested the Linux room was a) it'll be quiter, so easier to take over and b) matlab loads quicker so we can get up and running faster.

This is ridiculously popular, is there one person using multiple accounts or something? Getting more people into the Linux rooms sounds like a good idea though. For most purposes they're far better than the windows machines.

We need to be careful though, if people are struggling with Matlab, then they don't want to be struggling with a new OS too. Perhaps give them the options of windows or linux sessions, they'd be mostly the same anyway since matlab is the same crappy piece of software on both. (Much prefer custom c programs)

Hey gang, can we put the considerations of execution on the academic support forum, am getting confused about the number of students we've gotta take.

I don't think anyone could struggle with the Linux machines (and still expect to pass MBC). Just dive straight into Matlab and there shouldn't be any problems other than accessing directories is what I've found.
