Who's running?...

I just thought I'd preempt the flood of election posts by keeping the flame war to one thread.

I know Dave and Cosmin are running for president, but are there any other dark horses lurking round the department (PBiG aside), set to run?

Who's going to do my job(s)?

Kat's?

Steven's?...

The unnofficial hustings/manifesto wars begin here!

As I said in my email, don't ask me, I won't tell.

I'm going to run for Academic Support (one of them). Alex said that he no longer wishes to run, and I know of no other candidates (not even any trivial ones).

I said I might be running for president, I'm not 100% sure yet. I'll run if no one else except Dave does, if only to make the elections more interesting. :P
I'll also run for either Talks Coordinator or Website (very probably the former), since I'll actually have a real chance of getting one of those.

I will be running for social sec (Kat's job), but I think I may have difficulty getting the job as I've been a terrible publicity exec. Damn computers. I might also run for something else depending on what's in need of candidates that I could do.

Don't think about whether I'd be good at the job
Vote the 7ft bunny rabbit!

God the union elections suck. No-one really mentions any policy in their campaigns.

You could read the manifestos like I did, but that took me about an hour for all the positions. I was just really p*****d off when Tommo came into our lecture and made us watch his painfully dull and poorly made movie. At least with WMS the hustings are optional, and you might recognise some of the candidates as well o_O

Woolley all the way.

Have they announced the winner yet? Voting ended quite a while ago and it was online. Who won? I voted Tommo

Yes, Tommo won, they sent out an email saying the results on the website. Though they took ages to appear after the winners were announced. Absolutely no-one that I voted for won a sabb position. On the contrary everyone I voted for in the mock election won, apparently my vote only counts when it doesn't matter :p

edit: what happens if the votes are tied? quite a possible situation.

You should have voted for Woolley. He would have improved the quality of everything by 75% and won the war on terror.

I voted for wooley, in the first round anyway, but that was the only one it turned out.

Come on team... noone's done anything to grab my vote yet! Start your campaigning early, I want policies!

Make them up if you have to!

In my case, there is little to tell in terms of policies, apart from continue providing academic support in a lively and enthusiastic manner that well befits Tom's legacy. I liked most of Tom's ideas, and would be keen to see them implemented.

Which ones didn't you like?

And why are you the best?

The way things look, I might very well be the best by virtue of being the only non-trivial candidate. Also, a large number of people in 1st and 2nd years will testify that I am seldom unwilling to help people out.

I can think of one minor disagreement between you and I, and that is the polya-based module on teaching mathematics. I agree with Mario in that I think it should be kept informal and under the radar. However, I do agree with the idea itself.

Please vote me (Alex Oakes) for social sec! I need votes.

Also don't read my manifesto.

Edit: have just kulled a load of the publicity group 74 members to 46. lol

Wow, looks like there's going to be some huge surprises this election. Also, I had a sneaking suspicion that Xedi was going to go for publicity, at least he knows how to photoshop things quite well...

edit: perhaps I should have read his manifesto first

actually, photoshopping ability was pretty much the gist of it, but do vote for him.

I think we'll end up 'volunteering' anyone with any experience in hosting and coding with a website. On a similar matter we're screwed if cosmin wins the election as well, we'll have no talks coordinator

Indeed, I think we'll coopt Rupert for web editor- he seemed well up for it on monday: I hope he just forgot...

Suddenly, voting this way seems bound to throw up anomelies (no CJ, no Rupert and a weird distribution of candidacies), I'm convinced we'll wind up losing all of our best people just cos noone turned up to hustings. Hardcore members thrown by the wayside just cos some prick plasters the department in pictures of him clutching a beer can with the caption "vote Shane Thwingle for mathsoc!"

And while I'm at it, what's with all of the newbies calling us mathsoc and not knowing anything about the society?!

Maybe I'm just getting protective of my baby, but right now- a closed exec-based handpick sounds awfully good...

Agree with Tom, was pretty put off by the 1st year running for president saying "We are Warwick’s largest academic society, and must stop hiding away.", especially seeing as he doesn't come to discussion groups... But he'll increase the number of socials from one a year ! Wait... What ? One ? :D

I think the hustings served to remind him that just because what we do isn't screamed from the mountaintops, it doesn't mean we're idle. Also, I think he now has a notion that, while he might be a decent treasurer (my British coin voted in his favour), he would be wiser to wait a bit on the president front.

Poor bloke, not sure he was prepared for the vehemence of our cliqueyness...

Still, I can't help but feel he should have known a little more about the society.

Yeah. Still, he seemed like a nice guy and could do a good job as treasurer. It's not as bad as the guy going for revision guides: no one knows him, 3 line manifesto, didn't turn up to hustings and called us mathsoc (:O)...

I'm guessing he abstained from voting in that election by not making the selection.

I did too. Not that this will accomplish much.

Vote Alex Oakes for social sec.

Edit: I Stand corrected. RON rushes in to save the day. Never a wasted vote.

My mistake to vote for the only candidate before voting for RON was possible.

I'd only voted for Alex so far, due to his incessant campaigning. Cosmin's really gonna have to work hard now though, Dave's been canvassing lectures, and some people don't even know who cosmin is yet:-o

Meh. Shoutouts and such are not really my thing and I'm not trying to win a popularity contest :p. I guess I'll just have to rely on my manifesto.

Edit: One more thing actually: shouldn't we allow members to change their vote once they've cast it, seeing as the R.O.N. option was added late? This would be helpful for people like Sam who had already voted before it was introduced. Maybe we could tell people about it in an elections reminder e-mail. Also, that way I can change my vote from Alex to Ron!$ \qquad $ only joking :p

Yeah that would be nice, I don't see why we aren't allowed to change our minds.
Suppose Gregory Skulnick saves my life tomorrow, teaches me Alexander-Spanier cohomology and gives me a million pounds. Why couldn't I then vote for him ?

I see the elections are still open. Are we still under the quorum then? Makes you wonder how many people just join the society for free revision guides. Fair-play to them though.

I'd have laughed at that, but I've already read through all the archives, damn webcomics... so addictive.
