Ressurecting the Word Game

Given a string of 3 letters, find a word containing those letters IN ORDER.

e.g. given IQU, answer with clIQUe.

Then you give a new 3-letter string to challenge people with.

Let's kick off with TCA

[edit]: I should have specified the letters must be adjacent as well.

Are we aiming for long or short words? Short is more impressive to fit the letters in, but long words sound cooler in general.
Edit: Or are the letters meant to be adjacent?

i told i have already looked 3 times, why wont u look for a change, scared that ur wrong, ur a not perfect cause u r a flawed human being, we all make mistakes, but it takes courage to admit to them.
PS: The 3 golden rules in any exam
1. Read the Question
2. Read the Question
3. READ THE QUESTION!
also u will need to look up and read many books for the second year essay, so in retrospect, reading understanding what is read could be conisdered by far the MOST IMPORTANT skills any mathematican could have. Your failure to realise this is of great concern and i feel if u do not learn this lesson soon then u r no mathematician.

Surely the ability to formulate your arguments clearly and precisely, in a logical manner, is also required?

I never said such logical reasoning is not important, however said reasoning and the learning of spelling and grammer can be obtained by reading various mathematical texts and emultaing the methods they perscribe to
So i say again solve EWQ

I don't really see what the problem is, EWQ was answered in post no. 5283, as you can easily see by scrolling up, so I don't see what all this is about. I should also point out that a significant number of great mathematicians could not read at all, the most prominent examples being O.L.O. Niloc, Andrew Trawe and Alexander Grothendieck.

which one is post 5283?
maybe instead u should state the time and date of the post
also considering ur list of mathematicians whob couldnt read, i have never head of them (until now), so i dont beleive they are that great a mathematican.
Im not saying their work and ideas were not important, and im pretty sure some of there work might be quite brilliant, but i dont feel they are as big as one of the true greats like euler, gauss, erdos to name a few.

You're definetly right about the mathematicians, their work is of little to no importance in the grand scheme of things, especially the last, Alexander Grothendieck, whose illiteracy prompted his early retirement from mathematics in the 70s.

As for the time and date of the answer post, I believe it is 4 May 2009, 2:14pm.

If you are so inclined as to wish to read books then it is highly recommended to get your hands on 'The Mathematician Who Could Not Read' by Icke. This pretty much covers the work each of these people did. In particular it points out some of the wonderful work of Trawe who solved quite a number of classical problems by more than elegant solutions.

wait is that your answer of SARdine
when has sardine got EWQ in it?
as sardine is clearly not correct, my stament of there being no solution given to EWQ still stands, which means your still looking for a EWQ solution

ps: also about the book The Mathematician Who Could Not Read, surely that requires the ability to read, so saying that kinda shoots yourself in the foot.

when has sardine got EWQ in it?

So, sardines are a group of several types of small, oily fish related to herrings, family Clupeidae. Sardines were named after the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, where they were once in abundance. The terms are not precise, and the usual meanings vary by region; for instance, to many people a sardine is a young European pilchard. A generalisation is that if the fish is under 4″ long (10 cm) it is classed as a sardine, and if larger than 4″ it is classed as a pilchard. The FAO/WHO Codex standard for canned sardines cites 21 species that may be classed as sardines; FishBase, a comprehensive database of information about fish, lists at least six species called just “pilchard,” over a dozen called just “sardine,” and many more with the two basic names qualified by various adjectives. As a food, sardines are very rich in minerals. They can be consumed in a variety of ways (e.g., grilled, pickled, smoked) though canned sardines are very popular worldwide.

Sardines from the Pacific.

Can I point out that Euler was in fact unable to read for a significant part of his life. As a matter of fact, for approximately 22 years Euler was unable to read. If you would like to know more about Euler then may I suggest you read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler

This also has interesting information about his many different theorems.

in a word, yes
clearly the word sardine does not have EWQ in it as it doesnt even have a q or w in it.
So will people just shut up about saying there is a solution when there isnt and spend more time actually looking for a solution to my problem of EWQ.
So people please do not post there is a solution until there actually IS a solution.

ps, the reason euler couldnt read was because he was blind in his later years, but he read extensively beforehand, and im pretty sure in that time there would be some kind of braille so he could read by "touch".

Mauhbc.

Referring back to your point that there might have been some braille around by then. Braille was not in fact introduced until after Euler's death: it was not until the 19th century that Braille was discovered being used in Latin America. It was not until much later that Braille made its way to Europe. On an aside, until the 20th century no name had yet been discovered for what we now know as Braille.

Can I also observe that there is no symbol in braille for 'phi', meaning that Euler would have struggled to read books about his own work, even if they had been translated for him into a braille type language.

To correct your grammar: it is not 'the braille', just 'braille'. You are correct about phi however, it might indeed have had all the letters. But how would he have done the brackets? Would he have had to list off the letters 'k' 'r' 'a' 'm' 'm' 'e' 'r'?

But that would be a ludicrous thing. Also may I note a spelling error in my own text: he would in fact have wanted to spell out 'k' 'l' 'a' 'm' 'm' 'e' 'r', which is German for bracket. Else he would have spelt something completely different!

Ha! Well done RobH.

AfFLUent.

Let's proceed to GGT (solution may involve cramming words together that should be separate, I haven't checked).

It can't be worse than PBiG's supposed solution for EWQ which was YTREWQ, i.e. QWERTY backwards.

Ouch! I propose eGGTimer, and if that stands, let the next one be ITO.

Was that actually the word that we spend all that time searching for? Qwerty backwards? When Qwerty isnt even a word itself...

Hmm... well that was a useful way for me to spend my time... From now on, I will not be taking part in this game. For that reason, and also since there must be better word related games to play...

You were supposed to answer ZZZ, so do that now please. We have already established that paduasoy has no Z in it.

ZZZ the drink is a brand.

Example: Ouzo is a type of drink (made my many different brands), Pimm's is a trademark for a gin-based drink.

ZZZ the drink falls in the latter category.

ZZZ may well be a Dutch band, but band names are not words.

ZZZ for sleep is definitely not a word.

So keep trying... and best of luck to you.

zzz for sleep is a word as it is the onomatopoeic word that symbolises the sound when someone is asleep

  1. zZz is a Dutch band from Amsterdam, founded in 2001, formed by Björn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel. It is remarkable that the instruments of the ...

Can you please play by the rules now? It was very clear from the start that you can only use common nouns. None of your answers are therefore valid (as well as none of the possible answers for EWQ apart from the one on fishbase). So please keep trying.

P.S. sardIOUine is a type of fish, check fishbase if you do not believe me.

Um, in case you hadn't noticed zzz does not even contain the characters zzz so that is most certainly not a valid solution anyway.

Mr Mauhbc.

I do not know who you are, so say this impartially: the following is a direct quote from the website you highlighted.

"Graphic representations of noises, such as brrr, shhh, and zzz, do not really count as proper words."

I hope that this clears your issue, and that you can continue playing the game fairly. Please try to use only real words (this goes back to the use of ewq as well), since otherwise the game becomes meaningless.

Best wishes.

owen u have no idea who i am? lol
anyway the link says either my answer is correct, or there is no answer, either way the term ZZZ is discontinued, so now try KMA.

PS: the website says "Graphic representations of noises, such as brrr, shhh, and zzz, do not really count as 'proper' words." It didnt say they are not words at all.
PSS:How the hell do u do bold typeface in a post

If there is no answer then the official rules stipulate that I have to give a new string, so forget about KMA for the moment. The new string is: AAA. Good luck.

P.S. KMA is trivial anyway, e.g. sardKMAine.

There is no problem with the suggestion zzz but this doesn't contain the string which was asked of you so I think it is still perfectly alive. Not to mention there being plenty of obvious solutions.

P.S. P.S stands for postscript and is usually added at the end of a letter after a person has signed their name. If anything further is required to be added one generally uses the abbreviations P.P.S followed by P.P.P.S and so on. When being read aloud these are usually enunciated post-postscript and post-post-postscript respectively.

P.P.S. P.S. I love you.

cosmin is banned until he can come up with something other than sticking my suggested KMA in the word sardine, ie he stops being a troll, so were are still lokking for KMA, and i know for a fact theres a word with that combination but has nothing to do with fish
ps triple letters are also banned

Yes, blacKMAil, which is utterly trivial compared to sardKMAine (a type of sardine).

The string is AAA nao. Thank you.

P.S. I'm afraid you don't get to decide what is banned.

cosmin u can just edit other posts like that, AAA is valid, so try CCC (or BBB, or any other triple letter combinations).

PS: Cosmin if u do that again i willreport u for blantent abuse of position as web editor and force a re-election
