So after the hustings what are people's thoughts on the candidates running?

Indeed. Some presentations evoked a definate No vote, but a few provided food for thought.

It'll be interesting to see how well the different people work with each other when its done, we might end up with a broader mix of personalities on the exec.
It only just occured to me actually that the large number of mathematicians is a problem, as in other subjects there is a much more close-knit community to work with, does anyone agree with that?
Anyway I don't know who the social sec will be next year but I would encourage you to run events in the first week, second week, and every week thereafter. maybe the integrating factor can wait till later, whatever, but at least stick something on.

I fear some long-surpressed tensions between certain parties made themselves a little too evident. I'm sorry for my part in the cat-fighting by the way (especially since I'm not even running for anything). I have a mind at some point to organise a little social for leaving exec members, that we might help each other to let go. In the end, one has to let one's children grow up.

I think everyone needs to lighten up a bit. How can we expect people to come to the maths society and enjoy themselves, if even the current members aren't having fun.

After the Hustings a lot of us went to the Grad, talked, and actually had a lot of fun discussing new ideas for the society and ways to implement them. Even if I don't become a part of it I'm confident that the new exec will be strong and creative in their actions.

Let's be frank, one doesn't have to be on the exec to do stuff for the society. I think one thing we ought to do next year is improve communications between the exec and the committed members. Have a "crew" mailing list.

That's pretty much what the groups system on the website is for, though I think it might be better to have less groups or just all the enthusiastic members in one group to make things a bit easier. In any case, improving communications between the exec and all types of members should be a top priority.

Applicants should clearly provide pictures or have Facebook accounts so that I can work out exactly who they are :P

Yes it is a lot better when you know who the candidates are. That's why I went to hustings. :P

Agreed. Apart form the regular attendees of DG's, I either knew people's names and not their faces, or their faces and not their names. After the hustings, I actually knew all the candidates!

I am one of the candidates running for president, however: due to an irrational fear of facebook, I am afraid you will not find me there... Instead I will describe myself (as in my manifesto) as the guy with the green jacket. If further description is needed then do say.

Have much fun.

Owen.
