OK, here's a new forum game. Maths people are meant to be night owls (what I've heard anyway), and I certainly fit into this category. But who's the best at staying up late? The rules are simple - you can only post on this thread if you are up later than the previous poster. So, its about 2:50am atm here, so a person up at 3am can post. Use the forum timestamps as the official time. The winner is the last person to post :) Please don't post if you have woken up really early! Although I doubt that will apply to anyone here. And, you can't post twice in a row. 2:52am now - good luck! Oh yeah, and this can run over several days :D |

Right this is my true effort for the insomniac title. I have been up all night and have not slept till now. CJ or Cosmin might steal it but this is all i can do from the linux room, still working. Beat that. 33 hours up, and working. |

You're declaring the winner now? I thought it was MY forum game sulks But yeah, Cosmin should win. I logged on last night at 4am because of trouble sleeping, and he was still on MSN tapping away, so he is definitely the true insomniac |

Yeah but that guy probably didn't eat or drink. I'm pretty certain you can't directly die from sleep deprivation except after insane ammounts of time without sleep (and even then, its from not being able to control your body temperature and stuff like that, according to an experiment on mice I've read about). The world record is in fact 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes, and the guy who beat it is probably OK. :p |

I thought that those records had to be safetyed, like they hav to have like an hours sleep every so long the point being they dont do massive harm to themselves but still go through much hardship related to sleep deprivation. I may be wrong. I am quite sure that the gaming Korean did die of sleep deprivation. It's hard to die from sleep deprivation because after a while you just pass out involantarily. Also there are some monks whose religeon escapes me who can live without sleep because they can meditate so deeply it counts toward REM sleep. |

It's about 4.30 a.m. I'm in the Maths Building pulling an all-nighter to get the Algebra II revision guide finished. And I've been working since 10 a.m. yesterday. I so win the Insomniac Mathematicians game. Daniel |

I don't stand any chance this term with intro to geometry lectures. It's the only lecture I've fallen asleep in. I did stay up for 40 hours once, however I was so tired by that point that I ended up eating shreddies for lunch and passed out on the sofa, I have normal limits y'know :P |

Over summer I sacked off two night's worth of sleep in a row, simply because I didn't want to stop what I was doing in the day. It's pretty easy to stay up indefinitely, you just need music and fruit juice. Also, THIS ISN'T A DISCUSSION THREAD. It's a game thread. Bunch of savages in this town... |

Didn't we decide it wasn't the time of the post technically but how long you'd been up for. With Cosmin level ability you need to define something like that. I think Cosmin was up for 48 hours+? Has anyone beaten that? |

Yeah, and you got more than the rest of the second year on the forums on that test. Darn you. You only did that test because I woke you up via text once the test had started. |

getting back to the matter at hand, I think I would actually hold the record if we extend the definition to include time where there were no periods of sleep exceeding 20 mins (occuring less than once every 2 or 3 hours). I went four successive weekends in term one with no sleep at all on saturday night, little or no Sunday napping, and only a few scarce power naps (ocassionally none) on Sunday night. I then continued like this throughout the day and served hot chocolate in the evening 'til 3am. This must amount to at least one 72+ hour period with no non-trivial sleep. Also I remember that there was a period of two weeks during the last term where there were only 2 nights in which I slept in a bed. All other sleep in that fornight was on the maths department floor. I felt physically sick. A lot of Christians told me that they had been frequently praying for my sleeping patterns. God must have listened as I can now stay awake even in (some) lectures. Also I have slept every night this term, except the night before the Excursions essay deadline. |

Often the Undergraduate Workroom floor. Also there were times after lectures/seminars when I would say "I'll catch you up in a minute, first I'll have a quick lie down since this place seems to be empty now" Also, I remember a lot of times when I would feel so tired that, when I looked down at a stone pavement, I would think "Oh how soft and comfortable it looks". By the time I actually climbed into my bed, it seemed like the greatest comfort ever. |
