Hi all,

Is anything planned for the first social of Term 1 yet? I remember speaking to Jamie about it at Supercool in term 3, just wondered if anything was concrete yet. Cheers!

I think it'll be similar to the integrating factor... are you forward planning to ensure that you keep that night free?! :-) x

As far as I know (not the most inspiring thing to have come from my lips as President...), we're probably doing a big event in the Maths Common Room (you know, the upstairsy faculty-ey one) with music, booze, etc. Thankfully, I have finally got some free time on my hands (my teaching job has just finished, and Emma's gone off to Kenya, so I'm borrreeeddd), so really aiming at exec people, we need to have a chat about what exactly is going on - maybe I should get in contact with some of the faculty sooner rather than later to get everything confirmed as well.

I would suspect, based on previous conversations that I barely remember, that we'll probably run it in week 3 ish...

Anyway, will start getting in contact with everyone this week - toodles!

Sounds good Jamie. Week 3 sounds right: Freshers' fortnight is over, but people will still be keen (before they realise how awful Analysis 1 is and all leave).

Like we spoke about at Supercool, I'm more than happy to offer my DJ setup for the event - I have everything you'd need other than speakers. If other people want to play music with it, all they would need to do would be to bring along a CD or even a memory stick of the songs they want to play, and everything would work out fine (my setup is vinyl based, but by the wonders of modern technology you can run CDs and MP3s from vinyl decks).

Let me know!

Awesome :) I think we should be able to get hold of the department's PA again, so can hook that up. I might also look into seeing if we can find some CD changers, make stuff a bit easier for other DJs (myself included - used to be Offbeat until I realised they didn't really like my music tastes)...

Cool - I have a reasonable mixer, so any type of CD player with standard outputs will do (either the red and white ones, or the type that you get on the end of headphones).

Would it be ok if I could do a little bit on the ones and twos myself, Martin?

Yep, definitely Daniel. If Jamie can get CD players, we'll hook those up to my equipment, if not then if you could burn the MP3s to CD then I have the equipment to sort that out.

Cheers!

Jamie,

Have you got in touch with the department. I will email them unless you reply to say that you have already......

Nope, I can't say that I have. I think the department know about it, and us borrowing the PA, or at least the girls in the offices do :)

Ooooh, I've forgotten how much fun it is to work out what sort of stuff I'm going to play :D

I'm thinking 2 sets of about an hour each would work well for me - one of fun, slightly cheesy oldish pop-rock (Bran Van 3000, Presidents of the USA, Run DMC, No Doubt, Wise Guys...) and one of modern alt/rock (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, QOTSA, RATM, Less Than Jake, Daft Punk, Lemon Jelly, Alabama 3...).

I need to burn a load of CDs though for all my older stuff :D

Yays for DJing!

Jamie

Edit:

In fact, we probably should set up who plays what sets and when - what time will this run from/to? Maybe 7pm-12am? In which case, say what sets you want, here's a random guess...

7pm-8pm: Jamie
8pm-9pm: Martin
9pm-10pm: Dan
10pm-11pm: Martin
11pm-12am: Jamie

How's that sound? Does anyone else want a set?

Ok, so we seem to have music sorted and i'm about to email colin.

Does anyone have anyhting we could use for lighting? I'm thinking maybe fairy lights along the rail at the top of the common room (pending approval) but we could do with something for the main floor - any ideas?

Hmm I guess I'd be interested in a set as well actually, if there's still space for an extra one. I'd just need to bring a CD with stuff to play, right?

Definitely a good idea to set up a running order for DJing, and 7pm to midnight seems like a good time frame for things to run to. I'm going to be DJing with my friend Eddie, but 2 whole hours might be a little long for us, 90 minutes would be great. How about this:

7-8 Jamie
8-9:30 Dan and Cosmin (divided between you how you like!)
9:30-11 Martin and Eddie
11-12 Jamie

That's just an idea, I'm definitely happy to play at a different time if need be!

Also Jamie, do you have CD players sorted? I can bring good headphones, a mixer and all the cables, but we need CD players if you guys want to use CDs. If you're going to use MP3s, my setup can sort that out, but these newfangled audio compact discs are too much for it to handle!

Fairy lights sound great - let me know if you need some... not sure about other lighting, I don't have anything exciting to offer :-(
It's beginning to sound like a proper knees up!
What'll be mathematical? Just the people? x

That order looks good, but i'm more than happy to cut down mine to 2×45 mins or something to give Dan and Cosmin more time?

What day are we actually running this in week 3 as well? We haven't really sorted that out, and Emma needs to take time off work!

I've just got into my Tocil flat today, am pretty much unpacked, just need to get rid of my bags and stuff now!

Will see you all over the coming days!

Jamie

edit: oh, almost forgot, don't have any CD players with me atm, but can grab one portable type one from my grandad's house (lives near Tesco) and I'm sure we can find something to use as a second one - perhaps even a PC?

I believe we decided wednesday week three.

Thanks for the lighting info Katie, may need some more fairy lights. Would anyone else like to contribute to the lighting issue? Otherwise we will just end up with fluorescent hospital lighting.

Yeah, I might as well bring my laptop actually, it'll be much easier (plus I've got around 150 gigs of music on it, which is useful :P).

It would be absolutely amazing if there was some nice lighting. Is there any way to have, say, only half of the flourescents on? Even that would be a nicer mood than pure brilliant white.

CD players sound good, so long as they have a headphone or line out. I have all the cables you need to connect them up to the PA from the mixer.

Cosmin, laptop would be great, but you'll need 2 sources of input so that you can start one as the previous one is ending. I can volunteer my laptop too, so if you bring a USB memory stick or something you can move some stuff over to mine and that way songs will fade into each other nicely =)

Looking forward to this! Are Freshers going to get the hard sell, telling them that they should come? I definitely think it's worthwhile, and advertising it to second and third years before lectures etc is a good idea. I know lots of departments at uni have a really high attendance at their freshers welcome events, I'm sure we could make this one a big one!

Right, sort of had a look in the common room although not that closely so anyone who regularly spends time in there feel free to correct. There seems to only be 1 light switch for the entire room so we either have all the lights on or all of them off. My personal preference would be off but obviously we then need some other stuff..........contributions?

Please ask anyone you know if they have anything we can use, I really don't want to have to hire stuff!

Why not just take the tubes out of the lights? I can do that... I can also disconnect them too, but the Maths Department might not like it :D I spent my summer as an apprentice electrician

I expect the maths department wouldn't really appreciate that....
If we all contribute one lamp/fairy lights I expect we could acheive the atmosphere we desire.
I have a set of multicoloured fairy lights which flash!! Off our tree. I also have a set of angels which give small white lights... quite attractive although they drop feathers everywhere :-s
Then I have two touch lamps which can give varying amounts of brightness.... ?

Hope they're ok as a contribution!

That sounds great Katie (we're definitely NOT getting into taking out tubes etc). If anyone else that sort of thing it would be great....

I have a lamp in my bedroom, which with the help of coloured plastic makes a nice coloured and fairly bright light, that we can definitely put on a table somewhere.

Also, seeing as Facebook now runs the universe, it's definitely worth getting a Facebook event sorted out ASAP! I'm not exec, so I don't want to tread on anyone's toes by starting it up, but Facebook is definitely an excellent way to get 2nd, 3rd and 4th years (and beyond!) to hear about the event.

When will the hard sell be starting to the first years?

Only around 10 days to go... WOO!

Ok,

I've spoken to Helen Hutchings (person we need consent from) and she's fine with us having the integrating factor in the common room on the following conditions:

We finish at 11pm (this is not negotiable)
The music does not disturb the academics in the building - this means that background noise plus a bit is ok but definitely not up to club dance music level.

Martin - you should check out the publicity forum and get the ball rolling a bit quicker on the advertising front :)

A little late night recon revealed that the common room lights have three levels of brightness. We'll go with the lowest and supplement with our own lighting :-D

Actually I don't really want to do the DJing after all, it's too hard to decide what to play. :P
I guess Dan can have the whole slot, if he wants to.

Just accepted the facebook invitation, I'll get some friends to do the same!

Is it possible to sort out the DJing order, now that we have new "opening" times etc? If at all possible, Ed and I would like to play either 8:30 till 10 or 9:30 till 11. Cheers!

7:30-8:00 - Dan (assuming you wants to do it on your own, if you want an hour, I'm happy to cut mine down)
8:00-9:30 - Jamie
9:30-11:00 - Ed and Martin

That seem ok?

Also, should we be subsidising the amount of money given to us by the department a little? Maybe double the amount?
