If what I have heard is true (I have reliable sources) then the social event planned for Monday won't be advertised on the grounds that if we advertise it and no one turns up it would look like it was a failure.

I can't begin to be annoyed at this self defeating logic, but I don't want to go on too much of a rant because I may be totally misinformed. So two things, is this event happening at all? and if it is then I would be happy to organise it because no one else seems to want to.

It is happening and it will be advertised :p. We've talked about it yesterday at the exec meeting and decided it would be better to have it on the Monday after the next so that it would give us enough time to publicise it properly.

P.S. You can find the thread with the discussion you're refering to in the publicity team forum.

Don't worry Richard, the event is happening on Monday week 4 and I am going to advertise it soon (just waiting for Alex to give me the details).

(PS. You are lame :p)

For something that should have been relatively simple, it seems a mountain has been made out of a mole-hill. It doesn't really matter if anyone turns up or not because the worst case scenario is that it's just a few of use that go and that will probably still be good fun.

I think it never was that big of a deal anyway, I don't know where you are getting the idea that we are all really afraid it might go wrong with nobody turning up...
Everything is good and simple ! :o

Yeah, it seems a bit paradoxical to want to keep it small because if a lot of people turn up then they will think the WMS is socially active and will probably have fun. On the other hand if few people turn up then it won't have any bearing on who is going to come or not come to our following socials.

P.S. (I hate it when people post while I'm typing :P)

I've been trying to clear with people for a week whether it should be "free hat" or not. Cosmin spammed up the publicity forum so it couldn't be decided in time. So we had to wait until Dave vetoed the idea in the meeting. Now I know what I am doing I can get Sam to advertise it.

Finally, I do want the event to get lots of people, but in the likely event that it doesn't, we (I) have to be careful in the way in which it is advertised.

For those worrying there will probably be free hats at the social, just we're not allowed to advertise it as such as it is too far too sad.

Any ideas for activities that make this event maths related?

Plan as it stands
Title: Topological Banana
Time: right when top b opens till right when it closes, moday after next
Place: Cholo ish tables
Other stuff: Hats, bitching about people too lame to come

If you seriously think that I did and that that's the reason why it wasn't decided in time, you are very lame. :p

Slightly more constructive comment: The Choloish tables aren't that great. We should try to get it in the area with couches and stuff.

Re: Free Hat.

Those at the exec meeting may recall my enthusiasm for the free hat idea (although the supposedly 'in' joke was lost on me). I mentioned that i used newspaper hats in my second Edinburgh production... here are a few hat based images.

The first one is a rather unsettled audience wearing their hats.
The second shows some audience members in the process of making their free hats.
The third is a rather angry priest.
Finally a publicity photo for the play.

I must just add, the play was not entirely about hats.

Have fun.
Owen.

I made a samurai hat out of shiny wrapping paper once because I'm that cool. It wasn't exactly stable though.
