Few theorems in the history of mathematics have acquired the almost legendary status that quadratic reciprocity holds in number theory. First conjectured by Euler, it provides a striking relationship between the primes in terms of the solvability of certain quadratic congruences and has become a cornerstone of elementary number theory. The great Carl Friedrich Gauss was the first one to provide a valid proof and liked it so much that he called it his "aureum theorema" (golden theorem) and provided no less than 8 different proofs during his lifetime. | ||

The Warwick Mathematics Society will be running a Puzzle Trail ending in a BBQ at BBQ site 3 (the one behind Claycroft and Arthur Vick). In teams of up to four, rush round campus as fast as possible solving simple logic and (slightly) mathsy puzzles and then come and join us for some food and post-exam chill-out in the sun (hopefully). Bring your own meat, or buy it there. Open to EVERYONE, you don't have to be a member of anything or know anything about differential geometry. Invite hall-mates, house-mates, just-mates, anyone. One pound entry for the Puzzle Trail and prizes to be awarded for the winning teams. The Puzzles really won't be too hard, so don't worry too much about not being able to do the trail. WMS members will be on hand to offer hints and clues, if you do really get stuck. Bring your own food and drink, we'll supply the buns and the barbecue. It all kicks off at 1pm Saturday Week 9 (*21st June*) in The Street (Maths building), and the BBQ will be there all day (1-7pm) on the BBQ site 3. | ||
