Exec Elections 2009/10

Welcome to the elections to the Executive Committee of the WMS for 2009/10. We're the largest academic society the Students' Union has, handling whopping budgets and changing lives and careers every day. Any member can run for a position, and it's a real C.V. booster.

  • President (x1)

The President is responsible for giving focus and direction to the biggest academic society on campus, which involves chairing meetings, delegating jobs, and having the final say on everything. Much more than something great to put on your CV.

  • Secretary (x1)

The Secretary is responsible for organising meetings, distributing minutes, and generally ensuring the smooth functioning of the society, as well as being a point of contact for the society from the outside world.

  • Treasurer (x1)

The Treasurer handles the money, makes sure that the society's spending is in line with its budget, and handles sponsorship of the society.

  • Academic Support (x1)

Academic issues are at the core of the society. By teaching, and coordinating academic projects, this position is responsible for much of the society's interactions with its members. In charge of the academic support team; runs Maths Cafe/Revision Cafe; also jointly in charge of (with the talks coordinator) running revision groups in term 3 and crash courses throughout the year.

  • Talks Coordinator (x1)

Responsible for convening talks in all their forms throughout the year: be they Discussion Groups (drawing from a pool of PhD students and enthusiastic members), Careers groups (working with companies and alumni to provide real insight into maths related careers) or Discussion groups specials (hunting down professional mathematicians with something to say). Also jointly in charge of (with academic support) running revision groups in term 3 and crash courses throughout the year.

  • Magazine Editor (x1)

Responsible for producing the society's magazine, the Mathemagician. A tough, but very rewarding job (you get to make something shiny). Familiarity with and willingness to use desktop publishing software is a must.

  • Revision Guides Editor (x1)

A very important one: responsible for writing and editing the society's revision guides, as well as sending them to the printers and co-ordinating sales with publicity. Must be able to use LaTeX well, and keep up with the year-to-year changes in syllabuses.

  • Website and IT Officer (x1)

Responsible for maintaining the society's online presence, keeping the rowdy hoards of forum people from blowing the website up, and looking after the day to day issues on the website, and keep the content fresh and relevant. Also responsible for teaching classes and organising support for LaTeX.

  • Social Secretary (x1)

Responsible for running the Integrating Factor, main society socials and after talk gatherings. This involves lots of organising of food, drink, venues, theme and anything else you can think of, as well as being present at the events to ensure everything runs smoothly.

  • Publicity Officer (x1)

In charge of the publicity team, and has overall responsibility for the general publicity of the society, in all its forms.
