Learn LaTeX !

One of our members has kindly agreed to do an online course in $ \LaTeX $, you can find details of the course under the 'academic stuff' link on the Learning LaTeX page.

The course is split into two components (connected of course) one online, and one based in the computer rooms in the Maths building. The latter gets started this week (week 3) on Wednesday 18th October, 11am - 1pm in A0.01, which is the Linux based computer room. Come along, ask questions, learn, be part of it.

$ \LaTeX $ is a way of typesetting mathematics on a computer, if you look at your average maths textbook, then you'll get an idea of the kind of thing $ \LaTeX $ can do. Being able to write in $ \LaTeX $ is a very useful skill and the sooner you get into it the easier it will be to type up your second and third year essays!

Discussion Groups

Monday of week four, MS.03 will play host to our very first discussion group.

Everyone is welcome; from the intrigued first year to the maths hungry titans of the fourth. There will be something for everyone as we talk you through those interesting wee beasties: julia sets.

Maths' prettiest pictures can come from the simplest of algorithms and have some extraordinary dynamical and topological properties.

Expect complex dynamics aplenty in a relaxed social atmosphere.

Maths Café

Wednesday 18th October, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Back by popular demand, Wednesdays 1pm, undergraduate workroom is the place to be if you need help with your maths. A bit like a large, informal supervision, in that there will be drinks and snacks for your consumption provided, but some maths will happen too.

What happens in each session is completely up to those who turn up, and though we're not going to give you all the answers, we are here to help, and can guide you until you find them yourselves. That's maths, and that's fun!

More information on the Maths Café pages.

The website will be offline on Thursday for about a half hour from 2:30pm. This is due to CompSoc doing server maintenance.

Integrated!

Integrating Factor Dancing
Integrating Factor Blackboard

The first Maths Society social of the year The Integrating Factor was a great success! We had logic puzzles, maths oriented drinking games, random blackboard proofs and light hearted banter aplenty.

Everyone who came had a great time and lots of fun! There were first years, second years, third years and fourth years from many different courses, not just mathematics, we were truly integrating.

As promised we had a blackboard, which became a hub of maths challenges and slightly drunken 'proofs'!

To all of those who didn't come: find someone you know who did and ask them about it.
Our next social it will be on Monday, week 4

The Integrating Factor

The Warwick Mathematics Society first social of the year sees the Graduate Club become a haven for maths banter and general good-times.

Come along from 10pm, Monday Week 2, and be one of the first fifty to solve a simple logic puzzle to get a free drink.

Entry costs £1 for members, £2 for non-members.
Tickets avaliable online and from Advance.
Enter Top-B then head on up to the grad club.

Presenting the Warwick Mathematics Society

From the start of the 2006/7 academic year, the society known as MathSoc, has become The Warwick Mathematics Society.

Under this new name, we hope to continue to do the things we've always done, revision guides, the Mathemagacian etc. But we want to do them bigger, better and with more involvement from society members than ever before. We believe that the WMS can become one of the biggest and most active student societies on campus.

We have a few new ideas for this year, and the relaunch of an old one! First up we want to start an informal student led 'discussion group'. One or two students would lead a group of interested people (not just students!) in a topic of their choosing. More details will follow later this term, but we're really excited and can't wait!

New Website

As part of the rebranding of the Society, we have a new website. The major changes are the new look, and that its much easier to add and update content, so hopefully the site will grow rapidly from its humble beginnings!

Some of the benefits you can enjoy are:

  • Six different theme colours, that rotate throughout the day.
  • Drupal core CMS.
  • Better looking urls, like /academic or /fun
  • The forums are back! Get talking!
  • LaTeX support (through DruTex) throughout the site, even $ \mathbb{HERE} $!
  • Search!

We have moved most of the content from the old site over to this one, but its so easy to create new content that we'll have much, much more on this site soon.
