T-Shirt Design Competition - Deadline Extended!

Members,

Because I forgot to put the promised folders for the T-Shirt design competition on the noticeboard, the deadline for submission has been extended to this Friday.

You can get an entry form online, or from the folder on the noticeboard.

When you've done your design, simply pop in the other folder on the noticeboard, and we'll let you know who has won in the coming weeks.

Winners will get some sort of prize, though we haven't decided what yet!

Quick Reminder

Members,

Just a quick reminder that this evening we're having a talk on "Symmetry and the Monster" given by its author Mark Ronan. He's going to talk about how over the course of the last century mathematicians classified all the finite simple groups. It's perhaps more interesting than it sounds on the surface, these groups are the building blocks of symmetry.

Afterwards we're going to retire to common room, for food, drink and the chance to ask Mark questions.

It all gets started at 5:15pm tonight, in MS.02.

Hope to see you there.

T-Shirt Design Competition

Last year, we gave you the opportunity to design a hoody for The Warwick Mathematics Society. This year we're giving you the chance to let us know what you'd like on the first ever society T-Shirts!

Designs can be anything, but try to stick to a single colour. Find attached an entry form that when completed you can put in the soon-to-appear folder on our noticeboard (which is between the two computer rooms at the front of the Maths Department.)

The New Year

Hello Members!

Thank you for joining The Warwick Mathematics Society for this year. We've got lots planned, and we'll usually use email and the website to keep you informed.

We're currently finalising when Maths Cafe and the LaTeX courses are starting, but we'll let you know when we've worked everything out!

A new year

Hello Members!

If you have joined in the past week or so, welcome!

With the new academic year just around the corner, we thought that we'd let you know about all the great new things the society is doing this year, and all the great things we did last year that we're doing again.

If want to rejoin the society, you can already do so on the union's website or you can come along to the societies fair on Wednesday where we're going to have a stand in The Cooler.

Summer Mathemagician

If you missed a copy of the Summer Mathemagician at the end of the term, we'll post one to you!

Send your postal address to: society@warwickmaths.org and we'll get it sent out pronto!

It's packed with puzzles, maths banter and an article explaining how GPS works.

Weather Update!

Members,

I know it has been raining, and generally rubbish, but the forecast for Tuesday is for clear skies, before we get back to more wind and rain to round off the week. Why not make the most of the good weather and come and join in with the Puzzle Trail and BBQ.

The Trail isn't (strictly) mathematical at all, it is logical though, but WMS members will be on hand if you get stuck. Be in The Street ready to head off on The Trail at 11am. Teams of 4(max) £1 per-person.

Revision groups- Algebra II

Dearest everyone,

I am delighted to inform you all that we (your favourite maths chums) are organising yet more revision based goodness in the form of a whole day devoted to everyones favourite, well thought out and not at all ludicrous course: Algebra II.

The fun starts at 11am in MS01 on wednesday 13th, the approximate plan is as follows:

  • 11:00-11:50, An heuristic introduction to groups: making the abstract intuitive with examples, justifications and a review of the lagrange theorem.

Website Usability

At the start of the year the Warwick Mathematics Society launched its brand new website, which changed colour hourly, was much more powerful and flexible, and has been slowly evolving ever since.

But what else could it do? What could it do better? And how does it make your life harder?

If you have any answers, I mean any, even very silly ones, like: It should do my ironing for me, please either email them to website@warwickmaths.org or post them on the forum

Thank you very much for your time, and good luck with exams!

Differentiation Revision Group

Hello,

Tomorrow (Friday) I'm going to be giving a differentiation revision group in MS.03 at 11am. Hopefully a kind of interactive revision lecture.

When we did the first year revision groups we found that people wanted specific problems worked through. However, we haven't covered the material in over a year (usually two) so we had to solve the problem, understand our solutions and then try to teach them all in one go.

So, if you have a specific example you would like worked through you can either:

  1. Ask in the middle of the Revision Group, and I'll try to answer it.
